About
Janika Naomi Kamm
Telling MOUNTAIN & WAVE STORIES.
I'm a freelance documentary filmmaker drawn to the outdoors, adventure, and stories with social and environmental impact. I'm particularly interested in people who stand up for something — those who work with nature, explore it, seek to understand it, or strive for a more just world.
Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, I first found my way into filmmaking in 2017, during a wildlife filmmaking internship in South Africa. I went on to study Literature, Art and Media Studies at the University of Konstanz, including a year at the University of Essex in England, where I focused on Literature and Film Studies. I graduated in 2020 and have been working as a freelance filmmaker ever since.
My work spans directing, cinematography, and editing. I enjoy bringing these roles together to follow a story from its first idea to its final cut. In recent years, I've increasingly focused on outdoor documentaries, exploring themes such as environmental protection and the people creating change in their own ways.
What I enjoy most is often the process of finding a story: developing an idea, figuring out the right perspective, and discovering what lies at its heart. This curiosity carries into the edit, where I work on shaping the narrative and dramatic structure of a film. My projects often take me outdoors and into remote or challenging terrain — places that call for adaptability, patience, and an eye for authentic moments.
Outside of filmmaking, I spend as much time as possible travelling, kitesurfing, and exploring the mountains in different ways. Being outdoors is more than a setting for my work. It's a source of curiosity, inspiration, and connection to the world around me.
What makes filmmaking especially meaningful to me are the people behind the stories and working with my crew members. I love meeting people who dedicate themselves to something they believe in and working alongside others who bring that same passion to a project. The chance to learn from one another and work towards a shared goal is a big part of why I do what I do — and what keeps me curious about the next story.
